I too believe that Anne was Emilie-with-a-y's older sister. Anne didn't mention it because, I believe, she felt she had no connection with her previous life in her family and as a musician -- she was a failure at that, and was now just a slave to a horrible man. I don't think, in her mind, there would be any point in sharing with Emilie-with-a-y that they are related -- that add just MORE pain to the situation, no?

I didn't notice that the Captain was the surviving twin until about my third read-through. I don't know why I missed that. That's about it, though. I'm wondering if there's more that I'm missing.

Funny you should mention that!! Honestly I've read the book three times and I never really paid that much attention.

I didn't guess the Captain was the other twin by myself, I only realized it when the captain and E.mily talked about it. And later on, it was a big shock to discover she was also the Count's daughter. In fact, even now, after 3-4 read, I still don't see any clue, except perhaps when she mentions the Captain's accent (as the Count is, I think, German).

Some more food for thought: Am I the only one who thought that Anne was Emilie's older sister? The red hair was what got me thinking. Emilie says she doesn't remember her very well, and it seems possible that she was also sold off to the Conservatoire, and telling the other children that she'd died was the easiest explanation for her sudden disappearance. Makes you wonder what Emilie's brothers and sisters were told when she was taken...

Oh my god you are a genius.
Why would Em mention her older sister, indeed, if it wasn't as a clue? And they look the same... she's just a few years older than her, and her parents never wanted to talk about the older sister... like there was some mystery about her ''death''.... oh god I adore you, I would NEVER have found that out by myself.

Is that Emilie with a "y" or EA as far as the older sister goes?

Actually, I think Anne might be EA's older sister too. I don't know about in real life. EA's older sister was just a normal person that she probably wasn't too close to. I don't think she is on good terms with anyone in her family as she seems to think they are dead to her.

She has stated that they are dead. Are they really or does she just not want to talk about them?

I think E.mily's whole story is a metaphor of Emilie's life. So I doubt Anne would really be her older sister's name --more like a symbol or something. I've never heard EA mention siblings...
As far as the whole ''dead family'' story goes, it's not sure wether they really are dead or what... If I remember well, she said they died in a fire... (but the whole family dying a violent death in a fire? Seems pretty... I don't know. Like a story. SO much of her life seems out of a book...) and in the Opheliac recording outtakes, she says something like «it's a good thing my family is dead... because they'd be pretty freaked out by now». But I know her father died a few years ago, I remember reading a journal entry about his death.

^ Her family is alive and well, apart from her father who apparently did die of cancer as she mentioned in her journal entry. It's kind of a taboo here in the Asylum, but no, a bit of (creepy) researching shows the whole "died in a fire" thing is not to be taken too literally. EA has siblings, none of them named Anne. The name Anne itself bears a meaning, as explained in this topic (the explanation has been confirmed by EA a while ago). So, no, although it's a possibility, I don't think Anne is necessarily Emil-y's sister and/or a reference to one of EA's real-life sisters.

HOWEVER - it crossed my mind that there might be a connection between both EA and Emil-y's families.
This is veeery delicate speculation, but here goes. In the Cutting Diary, EA mentions a posh music camp she attended when she was 12 and the cooking lessons she took while being there : "I had walked into their territory and used it as my escapist playground because I wanted to be as far from my music teacher as possible..." (I *think* she mentionned it again recently - wasn't it in the anti-bullying campain video? - as "a camp where very weird stuff happened".) I think the allusion to abuse/rape is quite clear... Note that she says "MY music teacher", so it might be one she had had for years - and we know since "Gothic Lolita" that she had been molested as a young child.
Emil-y has been abandoned by her parents to the Conservatory when she was around five, if I remember correctly, and when she comes back to London and goes through her old neighborhood, she states that she no longer considers them her family.
The fact that EA apparently burnt all bridges with her family (somewhere around the release of Enchant, I guess) might originate from the fact that she holds a grudge against them for leaving her at the hands of a pedophile, perhaps blinded by the success of their "child prodigy"... (On a sidenote, she also mentions, quite clearly, that they didn't take her symptoms of bipolar seriously, notably her auditory hallucinations.) Then again, this is pure speculation and this is probably as close as we'll ever get to the whole story. I am not condemning EA's family either way ; I just think it's interesting how the Victorian alternate reality could fill the plot holes in the strictly biographic part...

Edit : I just remembered - as for EA never mentioning siblings - actually, she did, briefly, in this interview.

^This is actually the same speculative conclusion i came to, and some of her poetry brought me to it as well. So Many Fools comes to mind..

I think she really did mean it when she said this book told the whole truth, thing is, you need to know about her actual history in order to see it.

i don't see how Ann could be Emilie's older sister.

the book never ever mentions Emiliy's sister having any musical talent.

(and if it does, that i totally missed it)

Personally, I've always found the possibility of Anne being Emilie's older sister as plausible. She mentions how people say they do look similar. Her parent's insist that the older sister is dead and never speak about it. on pg 32 Emilie overhears her parents arguing:

Quote:
"He has promised a sum such as we could live on for a year or more," said my father. "Not if you drink it away this time, we couldn't..."

Now, this could very well just mean that her father wastes all the money they get on booze, but I tend to feel that it could hint to them selling off the older sister as well.

Plus she thinks her father knows the Conservatoire guy when they meet in the pub.
That's what got me thinking that the sister was also sold.
And the whole looking alike thing.
