well knowing off the Goth subculture now and then, how it changed, how people and Goths see it and what Goth really is (And will we ever know the right answer?) There are times when Emilie is a Goth and when she's not. I think its all about how muffins see her :D I see her as Filthy Victorian Mad Girl - steampunk, lolita, victorian, gothic, brulesque.... All in one :D

I'm totally not a Goth, ;) but EA seems to defy fitting into one genre.

I believe that (as PlagueRat_Diclonius mentionned) that her interests toward litterature and previous eras make ''Goth'' the most accurate (popular) label for her . But since I love the word Violindustrial , I prefer describing her in her own words than deciding myself what she is and what her music sounds like ; it sounds like some EA , plain simple :P

I the goth label can cover The Sisters of Mercy, Type O Negative and Edgar Allan Poe, I'm sure there's room for Emilie Autumn under its roof as well...

I watched a youtube video called 'What Goth Is Not' by a goth called LeahMouse. She made the point that goth isn't all about the clothes and the makeup, it's a state of mind. It's an appreciation for the darker things of life, and it's pretty obvious that Emilie, just as nearly all of us do, feels like that. Why are we labelling her anyone? Labels are for the ignorant, look past the image and into the person. :)

I would refrain from labeling EA as "Goth". Not that there is anything wrong with the Goth culture, I just find it difficult to assign that label to her music. Some of her songs have ventured into that genre, while others are straight forward pop/rock.

What's wonderful about EA is that her music is so hard to define. It does not fit into any mold. Hell, it has broken a lot of the molds! If I were forced to squeeze her music into one definition, it would have to be "melancholy". Many of the song topics and subject matter is dark, but there is a certain "hope" inherent in the lyrics. Hope that whatever is dragging her (or the listener) down is going to end, and they will be free. I do hope that we become free while still alive, of course! The whole Opheliac album is a great example.

I agree with a previous poster - EA is EA. I for one am eternally grateful that she has chosen to share her gifts with us.

@LadyLacrymose I LOVE LeahMouse, and her videos are great!
And yeah, she's totally right.

Though I would say it's MOSTLY about the music, cause where else would it have it's name?
But the fashion and mindset is a big part of it too, and if EA actually listens to goth music, she would definitely classify as a goth. But you can still have all those things and still claim / fell that you're not, and that's totally fine!

Why should we label EA as anything?

She is beautiful and remarkable human being that inspires us. In my personal opinion, because although I am not, I have a lot of goth friends, I do not see EA as goth. I'd say she a big bowl of faeries, vintage, nonsense, punk, revenge, beauty, honesty, rats, and tea. I know a lot of people who just dress goth, and do not listen to the music. I wouldn't classify her music as goth either. Maybe some, but songs like "Save You" is like folk pop, then songs like "Willow" are classical, and "How Strange" as pop. Her Opheliac and Fight Like A Girl eras are hard to describe, other than victoriandustrial. She can't classify how she dresses either. She's another version of a woman who loves to express herself through looks. Like Lady Gaga, Madonna, and some males like Boy George and Adam Lambert. You also can't classify people by how they dress either, as I said before with people dress how they want, but that doesn't always reflect their personality.

So that being said, she is another wonderful person, brave enough to express herself and not give a fuck about what others say. She creates her music in many forms, expressing feelings, and she expresses them in ways we can't describe. So let's just say, words cannot describe Emilie, and how wonderful she is.
