One of the great things about music is that we can apply certain songs to different experiences than the artist may have originally intended, which allows the listener to connect better. Not everyone has experienced the same trials throughout life, and unfortunately we may not be able to completely relate to a specific song because of that.

For instance, despite enjoying the song Thank God I'm Pretty, I am unable to relate to it at all. I've never received any sort of 'special' (for lack of a better word... not necessarily good or bad) treatment because of my 'beauty', in fact, it has almost always been completely opposite and I have been mocked because of my 'lack of beauty' (I can see my beauty at times, yet I don't really mean from my point of view, rather that almost all my life I have been called ugly, etc.). If I think of the song from another's point of view, I can relate in that hypothetical way, yet it's just not the same. The song does nothing for me other than provide something for me to happily sing along to and/or enjoy listening to.

I was curious what other's were unable to relate to, or were least able to relate to. You can use any of Emilie's songs, just discuss. ^^

As soon as I read the title to this thread I was going to post about TGIP and say EXACTLY what you posted. lol I just feel I can't relate to it at all and I even have a really hard time listening to it because it reminds me of how average-looking I am (in the eyes of society - I don't necessarily believe this overall) and how I've never had the kind of problems she's had because of her looks. (As horrible as it sounds, this song almost makes me jealous...)

^well, I could refer to TGIP, but since I developped my nerdy-style as self-defence, I think I don't have to (fortunately).

I can't relate to most of the new songs, though. Actually, I can relate to Take The Pill and FLAG only (and it's a weak relation I must say). But still, I enjoy them :)

I think TGIP is something that a majority of people would say because a lot of people do not have the self esteem to fit the criteria of the song. I am pretty sure you are all gorgeous people, but we ourselves believe that we are not and that we are either just average or ugly. Or that we just don't fit in the criteria of society's "beauty," which sadly happens to be something a lot of people follow. However, that does not make one not or less beautiful than they truly are.
I can't really relate to the song with myself, but I understand it. I look at my friends, the one everyone adores and for some reason, I can see this song with her, even not to that drastic extent.

^Aww. I know what you mean though. I wouldn't say I was jealous about it, but I would definitely rather deal with the repercussions with being 'beautiful' than to have been mocked and made fun of all my life for being ugly. I mean, I'm sure both hurt in their own ways, yet I would have rather felt accepted (even if it was negative) early in my life than have been completely crushed.

Most of the songs are significant to me in one way or another, because like you said, I give them a personal meaning. Even though I can't apply a certain concept to my own experiences, I usually divide it and twist it so that I can fully relate, but if I were to choose a song I can't really split into pieces or alter the meaning of, that would be "Marry me"-I just see this one as a whole. ( although "I'll hide my behavior with wine as my savior" brings some memories back). TGIP as well, its too specific. On a less serious note, I dont love tea so much so it doesnt work to relieve pain or have any purifying effects on me @Self medicate with Tea.

I want my innocence back... Most of the lyrics fit so perfect to me, but I cant relate to the title... But it is still one of my favorites

I would say Juliet and Remember, mostly... I've never been in love. These songs make me kind of sad, because I wish I could experience some sort of undying adoration for someone, but I don't even have friends.

And, of course, TGIP. I'm not ugly. I think I'm pretty, not sexy like EA, just pretty. 'Cute.' I've been told often that I look like a 12 year old. BUT, I've never ever receieved special treatment because of my looks, so I can't relate to it at all. Absolutely love the song, though.

I Know Where You Sleep. Or any relationship based song I know of. Given my age I don't have that experience. But other songs yes.

We can choose non-EA related songs, right?

I can definitely see where you're coming from, but I don't think you need to have been in a relationship to relate to them. I can't relate songs like that to any of my own exes, but I feel instead like they could be about an ex friend or any "relationship" (romantic or not) that went really, really badly.

I believe that if it's in "EA General Discussion" board, then it's about EA's songs ;)
