I may have said this before a while back, but I felt like making a topic about it recently since, even re-reading it now, my beliefs on that are still the same.

In other words, I'm going to be the big, bad muffin in saying that... I don't want there to be a movie. Period.

For one thing, it's so condensed and it'd be weird to give the autobiographical view of Emilie to audiences who never knew who she was and were never given a reason why to like her.

The only thing I can imagine working to a degree are the Victorian diaries, if it were not for some of the things that, to me, would be utterly ridiculous on film: The talking rats.

Within its own realm, it's cute, almost silly in a sweet way. But to put that in a movie with violence and death would be like having Babe team up with Rambo. Can you really see the rats talking in a live action movie at all? I can't... and no one say CGI...

Even if their mouths didn't move it'd still be hilarious to see a rat just staring and sniffing around with a voice over... I mean, it'd just look childish and silly.

I don't know... I basically just don't think some of the things would work on screen, or be accepted by audiences even.

In any case... I know many muffins, and Em herself, were raving about an Asylum movie for the longest time. And I honestly would hate to see that happen.

So what do you guys think? Could a movie really work or not?

I just started rereading the book, too. ^^ Anyway...

I think it could work. It'd be just as ridiculous as Sucker Punch (just saying that since you mentioned it being ridiculous because of talking rats. I personally don't think it would be any more ridiculous than the other, but that's just me).

Either way, people in mental hospitals have mental problems, which include hallucinations (both visual and auditory), either from their diagnosis or medications or both, so talking rats and weird cut scenes can possibly work. As of how, I'm not sure, but it could happen. I know you said not to mention cgi, but it would work. I've seen good cgi and terrible cgi.

I don't think a movie would have to be directly like the book, either. I agree that there are parts in the book that I don't think would fit in very well (the cutting diary or drug diary, for instance), so those could be left out, or possibly even incorporated into the movie in a different way altogether.

So, yes. I think it could work. It probably wouldn't be an exact copy of the book, but most novels-turned-movies aren't 'word-for-word' either. If it were to happen, I think the best medium would be through animation and not live action.

I could care less about it being made a movie, though. I'd probab;y watch it, just to see, but meh. I'm not for it or against it, just answering your question. I actually love the visuals created in my head while reading AFWVG. ^^

I think it could work but if it comes to being a low-budget movie it would be cheesy and bad. I think this is a movie that needs a GREAT producer and director and a big budget to pull off. I'm kind of scared that it would turn out bad because it just seems dangerous to make this movie. It needs a lot of consideration for this movie to work.

Since there's no actual chance that this will ever be made into a film, I'm not too bothered, really. Emilie's talk about in on Twitter last Xmas seemed like a bit of fun, no? The same discussions she gets into with the crumpets back and forth on and off tour.

I don't think it could be a film. A BBC mini series would work out nicely.

The only way I could visualise it working would be with Jim Hensen like puppets - completley at odds to the rest of the film, but might work (and an excuse for puppets is a win in my mind!) :D

Not sure I like the idea about Jim Hensen, but Tim Burton sort of puppets would do. :) Especially in Corpse Bride style.

And I was thinking about anime based on that book...the plot is totally in the style that m&a muffins would love. There's possibility to draw amazing characters and landscapes. And for the music: of course there would be Emilie's song but I would like to hear Yuki kajiura in this as well...

I don't think there's any chance of an Asylum movie, ever. EA doesn't even have the budget for videoclips, so a whole movie? No way. And she can't hope to have it produced by a big company, such a story as E.mily's would never interest them...
I'd love a graphic novel version of E.mily's story. Maybe that's something I'll try if I have time some day...

In an interview I watched today, Emilie said she would like to make the rats giant and animatronic, sorry if I spelled that wrong, and she found a company for that while doing The Devil's Carnival. And I think it would be a pretty kick-ass movie ;)

Sidenote - Did anyone see the twat about doing a new tour after flag with a picture linked, kind of like a rat with its flesh peeling...Why can I imagine an animatronic one of those on stage :o

But Anyway, Tv series and graphic novel anre both really cool ideas that seem like they'd really easily work. I think Tim Burton would be able to boss this movie...If he was even interested. Think we should send him and Helena a copy of the book because he has been known to do movies for her ;) Or even Brad Siberling who did 'A Series of Unfortunate Events', I can imagine even like a sillouhette (bad spelling :D) of Emily-with-a-y talking to a rat maybe with a voice over similar to said movie. Not sure about Tim Burton dolls but maybe like Sweeny Todd...Helena for Captian!

I think that it could work as a movie.
It is set in an asylum, and it's the story of a girl with manic depression who made up a story set in another century with talking rats, it shouldn't make complete sense.

I think that she - and the bloody crumpets - could get this working. I think that the director from Devil's Carnival would do a good job, and they could use animatronic's for the rats, like Emilie said she wanted to originally. She could use basically the team/s that she worked with for The Devil's Carnival and make her book into a movie.

I think that people just need to realise that it's set in an asylum, and it's the story of a "crazy" girl, or what society classes crazy as, and it isn't going to make sense. Not in the way that a few of you want it to.
It would mean though that after watching the movie, you might get f.angirls, and no one likes them. It would bring a crowd of people that essentially don't know anything about Emilie other than what would be in the movie, and that would mean more fake plague rats, I guess that's the best way to put it.
It would bring a crowd of people that might not like EA's stuff, but have seen the movie.

But I still think it's a good idea.

They could use EA's music to scare off anyone who doesn't like the music ;)
